What is MOPS?

Here at MOPS, we gather and support moms. We believe in the simple but revolutionary idea that remarkable things happen when moms come together, face to face. That’s why we rally women to come together in their own neighborhoods and help each other through this thing called motherhood, one gathering at a time.

Our acronym stands for “Mothers of Preschoolers” because we began in 1973 when a group of moms of young children banded together to share their lives and parenting journeys. Over the past forty-five years, MOPS has expanded our reach to include moms with older kids, partnering with churches and organizations worldwide to equip and encourage moms in more than 60 countries.

MOPS groups are chartered through local faith-based organizations, including churches and other ministries. While each group offers its own unique feel, the MOPS program is built on several foundational principles:

  • Welcoming to all Women: We’ve all been placed in this time and place in history, as the tribe of women raising the world. And the beauty is we don’t have to all agree with one another but everyone is in, and we need each other.

  • Mentoring: Sometimes we need a mature woman who has been there, done that, to bounce ideas off of. That’s why we love our mentor moms, they have sage advice and willing ears.

  • Honest Conversation: Real talk is liberating. It frees us from assumptions that we are alone in our struggles.

  • Relevant Teaching: We provide hope filled, inspired speakers to encourage us as mothers and give us new tools to use in our role as Mom.

The above principles can be carried out through different aspects of a MOPS group:

  • Discussion: The intimate and accepting atmosphere of a small group offers moms a chance to share their successes, failures, questions, and concerns. It is during these times that a mom realizes that she is not alone, and lifelong friendships are formed.

  • Teaching: Topics presented at MOPS meetings celebrate motherhood and meet a mom’s unique needs during this season of life.

  • Creative Activities: Through creative projects and crafts, women are encouraged to experience the sense of accomplishment that comes with trying and finishing new things.

  • MOPS Kids: During MOPS meetings, children are cared for in our MOPS Kids program, where they experience love in a preschool-like setting. Learn more about our MOPS Kids program here.

You can get a chance to connect with moms, face to face, while your kids are safe and making friends, too. You can join MOPS for just $31.95, but groups may require additional fees to cover expenses, such as childcare. Go here for a list of MOPS groups in your area.
